Xterm js in Proxmox and Debian

Proxmox xterm.js can be added as an alternate console for a Debian Virtual Machine (VM). Nothing needs to be installed.

KEY POINT TO REMEMBER: VM needs to be OFF!

Configure Debian

Edit the GRUB configuration:

nano /etc/default/grub

Add the following parameters to the existing GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT line:

console=tty0 console=ttyS0,115200n8

Example:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet console=tty0 console=ttyS0,115200n8"

Apply the GRUB configuration, enable the serial login service, and completely shut down the Virtual Machine:

update-grub
systemctl enable serial-getty@ttyS0.service
poweroff

Add the Proxmox Serial Port

After the Virtual Machine shows as Stopped:

1. Select the Virtual Machine.

1. Select Hardware.

1. Select Add.

1. Select Serial Port.

1. Select Serial Port 0.

1. Start the Virtual Machine.

Do not change the Display hardware setting.

Open xterm.js

From the Proxmox Console drop-down menu, select:

xterm.js

The normal noVNC console remains available.
