The Windows software engineers didn't think far enough ahead or decided this was good enough.
 
Here's are the questions: What if a disk drive is removable and in an external USB drive bay?  Can it be encrypted with BitLocker and also have it possible for the Auto-Unlock feature to work.  Sure!
 
But wait...  What if that same drive is in an external eSATA Drive Bay (that's actually a thing)?  Well, Windows can't tell the difference between SATA and eSATA, so the Auto-Unlock feature won't work.  Unless...
 
Put it in a USB Drive Bay first, then back into the eSATA drive bay.  That should work.
